Ever since it opened in 1908 with a presentation of Aida, this world-class facility for opera, ballet and classical music has impressed visitors. Even though times of economic hardship, the elaborate Colon remains a high national priority, in part because it's the only facility of its kind in the country. Presidential command performances take place on the winter patriotic holidays of May 25 and July 9. No events take place in the summer months of January and February.

Within the lobby is a small but popular museum with exhibits of costumes, instruments and photographs of performers and performances. Very worthwhile guided visits cost u$s5 and take place hourly between 11 am and 3 pm weekdays, and 9 am and noon Saturdays.
